2019 ASG Awards


Each year at the Alberta Digestive Disease Summit, the Alberta Society of Gastroenterology celebrates three of its most outstanding members with a series of awards – and this year a very special fourth award has been added honouring the late Dr. Richard Fedorak.

We invite nominations for the 2019 Awards to recognize the achievements of the nominees and the impact they have had on the profession. We encourage you to submit nominations for those exceptional members whom you believe best represent the qualities outlined in the award categories below.

Award Categories

Alberta Society of Gastroenterology Distinguished Educator Award

The Alberta Society of Gastroenterology Distinguished Educator Award is presented to one ASG member who has made an outstanding contribution to education on a local, national or international basis. The contribution may be in the areas of direct teaching, research in education or development of educational programs.

Alberta Society of Gastroenterology Distinguished Researcher Award

The Alberta Society of Gastroenterology Distinguished Researcher Award is presented to one ASG member who has made an outstanding contribution to research.   

Sherbaniuk/Hershfield Award for Distinguished Service

Named for Dr. Richard Sherbaniuk and Dr. Noel Hershfield, leaders in the Alberta’s gastroenterology community, the Sherbaniuk / Hershfield Award for Distinguished Service is presented to one ASG member for outstanding contributions to the field of gastroenterology in Alberta.

Richard Fedorak Lifetime Achievement Award

Named for Dr. Richard Fedorak, who passed away in November 2018 while Dean of Medicine at the University of Alberta, this award recognizes an exceptional leader in the ASG community whose:

  • Work and involvement are widely acknowledged in the broad gastroenterology community

  • Accomplishments have improved the lives of people with GI diseases

  • Leadership and impact have been of importance for the ASG community

  • Contributions have touched multiple domains – as scholar, educator, clinical innovator, leader

The Richard Fedorak Lifetime Achievement Award is not necessarily awarded annually, but only in those years when an exceptional nominee is put forward.

Write a brief letter/ email of support, indicating into which award category your nominee falls.
